Evangelicals at FanExpo Denver were in for a revelation when Ghost Machine revealed the covers for an exciting comic connected to its recent horror cosmos, Hyde Street.

At a talk, Ghost Machine–the comics collective that puts out their work via Image Comics–displayed Hyde Street #1, the premier print of their monthly, ongoing Hyde Street series, plus It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour, a one-shot. The releases will arrive when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest and most penetrable–or what you call Halloween, All Souls’ Day, and Dias de los Muertos. Hyde Street #1 hits the streets on October 2nd, and It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour #1, October 30th, the Eve of the Hallowed.

Hyde Street inaugurates what the Ghost Machine Comics collective describes as a “new epic era in character-centered horror.” It’s a partnership between Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis, the genius behind DC’s Blackest Night and Aquaman. Hyde Street will showcase colors by Brad Anderson, inks by Danny Miki, and lettering by Rob Leigh.

“You might find yourself on Hyde Street. But be careful who you talk to and what you do because the consequences make death itself seem like the easy way out.”
Reis created Hyde Street #1 Cover A, and Gary Frank provided Cover B. Each cover features the mysterious character Mr. X-Ray. Cover D comes from Mike Deodato Jr. and marks his first Ghost Machine variant artwork. Deodato also crafted another Hyde Street character, Pranky. And fans still have the additional Hyde Street #1 covers from Kelley Jones and Reis to look forward to viewing for the first time.
Where Hyde Street focuses on the many threats of this new horror universe, It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour spotlights a single story.

Planning her nuptials, Lily wants to drop some poundage to make her figure fit easily into The Dress. She is to discover that weight is like debt; it’s easier to take on than to discharge. Her manipulative and skinny grandmother tirelessly pushes Lily to go for a quick-fix dietary supplement called Devour, as peddled by the enigmatic health guru Miss Goodbody. A supplement sold with the advertising slogan “Get thin… or die trying!”

It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour is Maytal Zchut’s first time at bat as a creative with the cooperative. She’s teaming with artist Leila Leiz, colorist Alex Sinclair, and letterer Rob Leigh, who created Miss Goodbody for It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour #1’s Cover A. Leiz sketched Cover B, and Frank made Cover C.

Johns observed, “Hyde Street was the perfect avenue for us to let a darker side of our imagination run wild. The characters will lure you into this world, each in their own unnerving way, and walking down any Hyde Street in your town will never feel the same again.
“Devour speaks to the cycle of relentless self-criticism and insecurity many of us experience in relation to our bodies. Leila’s dynamic artwork adds depth to each word, with her brilliant penciling and inking bringing the characters to life. Every element is further enhanced with phenomenal color by Alex Sinclair!”
